Close-up of audio equipment on a documentary film set

Sound is half the film, and nobody budgets for it

Audiences forgive an imperfect image. They will not forgive bad audio. Hollow room tone, a hum under an interview, music fighting a voice — viewers cannot always name the problem, but they stop trusting what they are watching.

What sound is actually doing

  • —Clean dialogue makes a speaker sound competent and prepared
  • —Location ambience makes a place feel real rather than staged
  • —Music sets the emotional read before a single word registers
  • —Silence, used deliberately, is the strongest emphasis you have

Where it goes wrong

Almost always on set, not in post. Interviews recorded in echoing rooms, HVAC left running, no backup track, no wild sound of the environment. Post can repair a lot, but it cannot invent what was never captured.

Treating audio as a first-class part of production is one of the cheapest upgrades a business can make to its video, and one of the most noticeable.
